The day Binay was proclaimed VP
MANILA, Philippines – Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay has been officially proclaimed vice-president-elect of the Philippines, with family and friends rejoicing their patriarch’s win over Liberal Party bet Manuel Roxas III.
Binay only won by a slim margin over Roxas, compared to the lead of president elect Benigno Aquino III to his closest rival, former president Joseph Estrada.
The vice-president-elect attended mass early, with his family, at the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Makati.
When he returned home, Binay entertained friends and supporters, who came to congratulate him.
Among his well-wishers was Council of Philippine Affairs Sec. Gen. Pastor “Boy” Saycon, who supported the Noynoy-Binay tandem.
Shortly after, he chose his barong for the proclamation, from three barongs made by his tailor, Robert Bonifacio.
Two barongs were given by Ed Lacson, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Binay's excitement for his proclamation was clear.
“Hindi (pa ako nakapagpa-facial). Pero naglagay na ako ng foundation,” Binay jokingly answered a reporter’s question. “Kailangan mabango tayo para pag tinaas ang kamay natin walang, ‘it's you their talking about.’”
At 1pm, the Binay family headed for Congress.
Elenita Binay, wife of the vice-president-elect, said that she is happy that the canvassing was finally over.
Upon arrival at the Batasan, Binay stayed in former House Speaker Jose de Venecia's room where he was greeted by Sen. Francis Escudero, House Speaker Prospero Nograles, and the De Venecia couple.
While waiting to be proclaimed, Binay listened to the televised speech of his friend and PDP-LABAN ally, Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr.,
A few moments later, Binay entered the plenary hall, where he was welcomed with much applause.
For the first time after the campaign, Binay approached president-elect Aquino and the Aquino sisters.
Binay said he & Aquino only talked briefly.
After his proclamation, Binay proceeded to play badminton then attended a private dinner. Report from Maricar Bautista, ABS-CBN News
