MANILA - Sen. Jinggoy Estrada is tapping veteran lawyer Jose Flaminiano to defend him in the plunder case filed against him by the Ombudsman before the Sandiganbayan last Friday.
Flaminiano, who defended former President Joseph Estrada in his impeachment trial, said he is ready to defend the younger Estrada despite the strong evidence being claimed by the Office of the Ombudsman.
Estrada and Senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Bong Revilla Jr. are facing plunder charges before the Sandiganbayan for their alleged connection to the multi-billion peso pork barrel scam.
Flaminiano said creating more than one court to hear the plunder cases involving other senators may result into complications, in case there will be conflicting decisions.
He said they might file a motion for judicial determination of probable cause of the case. Lawyers of Senator Bong Revilla Jr and his staff, Atty. Richard Cambe, filed a similar motion last Saturday.
Flaminiano is a former Manila prosecutor who defended former President Estrada in his impeachment trial before the Senate in late 2000. He later defended Estrada in his plunder trial before the Sandiganbayan.
