Former SC Justice Hugo Gutierrez Jr. passes away
MANILA - Former Supreme Court Justice Hugo E. Gutierrez Jr. has died at the age of 86.
The SC Public Information Office (SC-PIO) said he passed away at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Quezon City on Wednesday afternoon.
He served in the Supreme Court from 1982 until 1993.
Known for being a champion of civil liberties, Gutierrez also previously worked with the Office of the Solicitor General.
He was a member of the University of the Philippines College of Law Class of 1952, which produced a number of outstanding members, including former Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan and Justices Serafin Cuevas, Florentino Feliciano and Flerida Ruth Pineda and senators Joker Arroyo and Santanina Rasul.
Gutierrez had two children with Esperanza Cristobal Gutierrez.
Gutierrez’s body lies in state at the Sanctuarium along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.
His remains will be brought to Pampanga on Saturday.
