Brillantes says de Lima better off as senator
MANILA, Philippines - Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes advised his friend, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, to just run for the Senate instead of gunning for the position of Chief Justice.
Brillantes and de Lima met Wednesday night where the latter’s nomination as chief justice was discussed.
Brillantes said, “kung ako lang tatanungin, mag-senador siya, di CJ, gagarantiyahan ko siya, di siya madadaya. Hindi kasi madadaya maski sino.”
Brillantes dispelled notions that he and de Lima had a falling out over the handling of the electoral sabotage case against former Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos.
“Di naman totoo, baka di ganun pagkakasabi niya. Kasama ko lang siya last night we had long talk. We’re in very good terms. We know what we’re doing,” he added.
He said he also discussed with de Lima the presentation of witness Norie Unas before the Pasay court. Unas is the Comelec’s witness against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who was charged for electoral sabotage in the 2007 elections in Maguindanao.
Brillantes conceded though that he and de Lima have always had differences, which they resolve by discussions.
“I just have to talk to her again. We have always had differences naman … dahil magkaibigan kami nag-uusap kami pag may problema.”
