MANILA, Philippines - Several politicians have joined the Filipino nation in saying a prayer for the speedy recovery of King of Comedy Dolphy.

Senator Manuel “Manny” Villar said the government should already confer to Dolphy the National Artist award considering his outstanding contribution in the entertainment industry.

Dolphy endorsed Villar in the 2010 presidential elections.

"But more than the trophies he collected, Dolphy is known as a compassionate man, donating substantial wealth and talent to assist health welfare programs and provide financial assistance to senior actors and those involved in filmmaking including extras, stuntmen, bit players, crews and technical staff," he said.

"In my heart and in the hearts of many Filipinos, he is a National Artist," Villar added.

He said he is saddened over the current condition of the King of Comedy.

"We are one with the nation in praying for the speedy recovery of Dolphy. He is one of the few gems of the entertainment industry. His feat as a comedian will be very hard to replicate," he said.

The senator said he will forever remain grateful to Dolphy for supporting his advocacies and for endorsing him as a presidential candidate during the 2010 national elections.

"I have great admiration for people who came from humble beginnings and worked their way to the top. They teach the youth the value of hard work," Villar said.

Dolphy has actually been nominated in the past but he has only passed the first phase.

Binay calls groups to nominate Dolphy

In a separate statement, Vice President Jejomar Binay said he and his family are praying not only for Dolphy but also for his family in this hour of need.

He also asked concerned groups to act on the nomination of Dolphy immediately.

Binay said Dolphy “has given the people so much happiness in his sterling career as an actor, and has spoken to and for the Filipino. For this, he deserves our fervent prayers.”

Earlier today, President Benigno Aquino III also urged Filipinos to pray for comedy king Dolphy, who is in critical condition at the Makati Medical Center.

In a statement issued by Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, the Palace said President Benigno Aquino is one with the entire nation in praying for Dolphy to get better.

"We are united in our intentions for our revered icon of the Philippine entertainment industry. The President’s thoughts are with Mr. Quizon and his loved ones in these trying times," Lacierda said.
