MANILA - President Benigno Aquino III has not yet chosen a candidate that the Liberal Party (LP) will field in the 2016 elections, Malacanang said.

The statement was made by Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda in response to news reports that the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) is growing apprehensive about the possible fielding of Senator Grace Poe as the Liberal Party's candidate in the 2016 presidential elections.

Poe topped the senatorial elections in 2013.

"I think Congressman Toby Tiangco is way ahead of himself in trying to [read] the intentions of this administration," Lacierda said.

"Wala pang na-a-anunsyo si Pangulo tungkol sa 2016. If we look at the various statements of the President, he has maintained that we should elect the candidate who would continue to fight for reform. He never specified anyone,” he said.

UNA will likely support the candidacy of one of its founders, Vice President Jejomar Binay. Some camps said UNA is also wooing Poe as Binay’s running mate.
