Lacson blasts De Lima for Vizconde 'trial by publicity'
MANILA, Philippines - The Webb family on Wednesday found an ally in Sen. Panfilo Lacson, who claims to have been the subject of unfair treatment at the hands of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.
In a statement, Lacson accused de Lima of "crucifying people before the bar of public opinion" when she conducted a press conference on the results of the reinvestigation of the Vizconde massacre case.
"So what did she accomplish by announcing to the public an inconclusive finding that Hubert Webb may have been in the country when the Vizconde Massacre happened, except to be seen on TV and in the newspapers at the expense of the same people who cannot be prosecuted anyway under the principle of double jeopardy?" Lacson asked.
"I myself continue to suffer in indignity because of her insatiable thirst for publicity. To say she's pathetic would be a compliment. It's ludicrous to say the least. I hope she starts working and perform her mandate the right way for a change," he added.
A National Bureau of Investigation task force on Tuesday claimed Hubert Webb was not in the United States at the time of the Vizconde massacre, based on the testimonies of 7 new witnesses and immigration records. This, despite a Supreme Court ruling that acquitted Webb and his co-accused of the murders.
The Webb family, meanwhile, criticized the Department of Justice for ignoring other evidence such as the passenger manifest, immigration stamps and note verbale from Washington that proved Hubert was in the US.
