PNP looking to extend visiting hours for high profile inmates

MANILA - The Philippine National Police (PNP) has asked the chief of the Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Superintendent Mario Malana, to explain why the visiting hours for Senator Joseph Estrada were extended until the wee hours of Sunday.

Usual visiting hours are between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Thursdays and Sundays.

In an interview with ANC, PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac said the Estrada camp asked for permission to celebrate the senator’s 25th wedding anniversary with his wife, Precy.

The celebrations lasted until past 1:00 a.m. the following day, however.

“Chief Supt. Benito Estipona is taking to task [Malana] as to why he should not be administratively charged over what happened,” Sindac said.

Malana will have to be heard since “there might be prevailing circumstances that we’re not aware of.”

Sindac earlier said the PNP will be strict in implementing the visiting hours.

“We thank the media for its vigilance. We’re already investigating. This issue has also reached [Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas and PNP Director General Alan Purisima],” he said.

The visiting hours and days may soon be extended, however, as Roxas has already instructed the PNP to review the rules.

Roxas wants to realign the Custodial Center’s visiting schedule with that of the other detention centers under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

The schedule there is from Tuesdays to Sundays.

“They’re just studying the security implications, but we’re heading in that direction,” Sindac said.

If the schedule is adjusted, around 70 high profile detainees at the Custodial Center will benefit from it.
