The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) have condemned the killing Monday of another Filipino newsman.

Quezon province local radio host and newspaper correspondent Bert Sison in Lucena City was shot dead by motorcycle-riding assassins on June 30.

"Sison's murder is a tragic reminder that the Philippines continues to be one of the most dangerous countries in the world for practicing journalists," the IFJ said in a statement Thursday.

Sison was a correspondent of Regional Bulletin, a Quezon-based weekly. He also hosted the weekly Harana (Serenade) program on radio dzAT-AM in Lucena City .

He was driving home with his two daughters—Liwayway, 30 and Almira, 24--when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle.

The two daughters survived the attack, but Liwayway was reportedly shot in the arm. They are also news correspondents in Quezon.

Quezon a hot spot

According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), Quezon province is a "danger hot spot for journalists."

In 2003, another Lucena-based radio announcer, Apolinario "Polly" Pobeda was killed. Last year, an ambush also nearly killed Inquirer correspondent Delfin T. Mallari Jr.

"He is the third journalist to be murdered in the Philippines in 2008 and the 58th since President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's administration came to power in 2001," the NUJP said.

The IFJ and the NUJP strongly urged the Philippine government and the Philippine National Police to launch an immediate investigation and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

"The Philippines authorities can assist in ending the climate of impunity against the Philippines media by investigating fully every attack against a journalist and ensuring that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice," the IFJ added.

Meanwhile, the Task Force Sison arrested two men believed to be involved in the killing of the journalist.

Joselito Cabrera, 32 and Simeon Agila, 23 were nabbed after a concerned citizen informed policemen about the hideout of the armed suspects in Sariaya, Quezon.

Reports said that one of the two suspects tested positive for power burns. However, the task force is still cross matching the firearms to further strengthen the case against the suspect. -- With reports from Carmela Fonbuena, abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak; Zyann Ambrosio, ABS-CBN News
