Enrile family hoping for his hospital arrest
Jack Enrile resigned to father's fate
MANILA - "Once again, we have to deliver him to his jailers."
This is how former Congressman Juan "Jack" Ponce Enrile Jr. described how he felt as he escorted his father, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, to the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame.
The Sandiganbayan Third Division on Friday ordered Enrile arrested on plunder and graft charges in connection with a massive corruption scandal involving lawmakers' pork barrel funds.
The senator is accused of amassing P172 million in pork barrel kickbacks from 2003 -2010.
Speaking to ANC, the younger Enrile said he is hoping that his father will be allowed hospital arrest since he is already 90 years old. He noted that his father is suffering from macular degeneration and was supposed to undergo an eye operation on Saturday.
He said his father is also taking medication for hypertension.
"He may be a strong 90 but he is still 90," he said.
He also said that the entire family is resigned to the senator's fate.
"Given the circumstances, alam mo naman, this is not the first time na nangyari sa pamilya ito bagamat ngayon mas matatanda na kaming lahat. Medyo resigned kami na ito ang napala ng aming ama. Ngayon once again, we have to deliver him to his jailers so he can be processed," he said.
"Hopefully, he will be OK. 90 years old na siya. We are just hoping for the best. About an hour ago, I left my mother at the house. She did not look that good. After this, after my father is processed I will go back to check on her and see how she is doing."
Asked what his father might do while in detention, he said: "Maybe he will have time to write another book about this part of his life."
