MANILA - The government announced Thursday it has sacked Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) Director Clarito Barron amid the spike in garlic prices.

Agriculture Undersecretary Paz Benavidez will act as officer-in-charge.

Senator Cynthia Villar earlier forecasted that Barron will be replaced in the wake of the price hike.

“I think they will hold the director of the BPI responsible and he will be replaced,” Villar told ANC.

She said “whenever there's something wrong, somebody should be responsible.”

She said the National Garlic Action Team is responsible for failing to correctly forecast the level of garlic imports needed.

She questioned why, for example, the country imported some 8 million metric tons of garlic in March just as the local harvest was coming in and then stopped imports altogether after April. – from ANC and Johnson Manabat, dzMM
