MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - After refusing to accept any Cabinet post, Vice-President Jejomar Binay has apparently changed his mind and is now eyeing a government post.

During a special press dinner Tuesday night, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III told Malacañang reporters that he was informed Binay "now wants a government position."

Aquino said he had offered Binay to choose from 5 posts. Binay had asked for a reconsideration, he said.

“Pero pakibilisan lang niya. Nababawasan na ang inaalok ko. Kailangan ko talaga ng tao. Katulad ng [Metropolitan Manila Development Authority], di ba sa kanila rin ang flooding,” Aquino noted.

In a phone interview, Binay’s head for media relations Joey Salgado said Aquino could be referring to the positions he offered during a meeting in Times Street in Quezon City.

The meeting was held on June 23 at Aquino’s residence, their first after their respective proclamations by Congress.

There, Binay was asked to decide which of these offices to lead: the Department of Agrarian Reform, Truth Commission, Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The first 2 have already been filled-up.

Binay had expressed preference for the Department of Interior and Local Government portfolio.

Aquino, however, gave the post later to former Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo.

For his part, Salgado said Binay has yet to change his position about accepting a position in the Aquino Cabinet.

"The vice-president reiterates his statement that he is always read to assist the president. Such an offer is not pre-conditioned on being appointed to the Cabinet," Salgado said.

government post for binay

To prove that he is good, i believe the MMDA post fits him. Bayani Fernando has proven his worth when he was able to implement systems and projects in Metro Manila. And i can say, during his time, there have been great improvements. Sad that there's really a lot of 'pasaway' and undisciplined Filipinos who cannot follow even a simple "Bawal tumawid, nakamamatay" signage.

Take the offer now and prove yourself or go away forever.

It's looking like a very good decesion that P.Noy chose Robredo over Binay for DILG.

I also agree that either Urban Housing and MMDA is good for Binay.

The question is, is Binay good enough for Urban Housing and MMDA.

My pereption is that Binay was only good because he was the mayor of the richest city in the Philippines. Makati was already the richest even before the time of Binay. The Urban Housing or the MMDA would be a good test for him. If he can turn any of these two around, I will be a believer.
