Will Garci surface next to prove poll cheating?
MANILA, Philippines - Will former Commission on Elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano follow the examples of former election supervisor Lintang Bedol and suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Governor Zaldy Ampatuan and prove allegations of poll fraud in the 2004 and 2007 elections?
In a statement, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Garcillano could provide the missing pieces to the puzzle that will show electoral fraud did occur in the 2 elections.
"I hope that the troika – namely Lintang Bedol, Zaldy Ampatuan and Virgilio Garcillano – will collaborate and cooperate altogether in favor of the truth about the mockery of our country’s electoral process as institutionalized by Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Then, it will finally unravel what the Filipino people have known all along, albeit short in details," Lacson said.
Garcillano grabbed national headlines after he was allegedly caught on tape talking to then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo about plans to pad Arroyo's election tallies and ensure her victory in the 2004 presidential election.
Arroyo apologized on nationwide TV for talking to a poll commissioner during the canvassing of the 2004 election but denied rigging the results. The "Hello,Garci" scandal later led to several unsuccessful impeachment attempts against Arroyo.
In his statement, Lacson said proving electoral fraud may not cure the fraudulent Arroyo presidency but "it could very well land her and those responsible for the mockery of the elections of 2004 and 2007 in jail for life for the crime of electoral sabotage."
