Chiz: Politics ain't like love
MANILA, Philippines - Is Sen. Francis Escudero joining the Liberal Party's (LP) coalition for the 2013 elections, or will he be part of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA)?
Escudero, a reelectionist who's currently leading in surveys, said he has been talking to both camps but he has not decided which one to join.
But why not both?
"Ang pulitika, hindi naman parang pag-ibig na kailangang isa lang. Maaari at possible na ika'y tulungan at suportahan ng iba't ibang partido," he told reporters on Friday.
(Politics isn't like love where you must have only one partner. You can and it's possible for you to be assisted and supported by various parties.)
Escudero said any candidate would want to be backed by several parties. "Siguro kaplastikan namang sabihin na ayaw ng sinumang kandidato 'yon," he said.
For now, however, Escudero is leaving it to both parties to decide whether they're taking him in. He said he does not want to preempt the decision of the two coalitions.
Escudero added that he has close ties with the leaders of both camps: He supported both President Aquino of LP and Vice President Jejomar Binay of UNA in the 2010 elections.
"Sino bang mag-aakala na magkakaroon ng hiwalay na slate ang 'Noy-Bi' na sinuportahan ko noong nakaraang halalan?" he said. 'Noy-Bi' stands for Noynoy (Aquino) and Binay.
Whatever each coalition decides, Escudero said he will campaign mostly on his own.
"Basta ako mangangampanya para sa aking kandidatura sinuman ang makita ko na katabi ko o kasama ko o kapiling ko sa pangangampanya sa darating na 2013," he said.
