Singer with failed butt job cites need for regulation
MANILA - In the wake of a butt surgery case involving the Belo Medical Group (BMG) last week, a Filipina singer has filed a complaint against a doctor who allegedly botched a butt enhancement procedure performed on her 11 years ago.
Silena Sevilla said she filed a complaint before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against her doctor who injected silicone oil into her buttocks back when she was just starting out her singing career. She declined to name the doctor, upon the advice of her lawyer and the NBI.
"Sa lupon ng mga kaibigan ko, mga katrabaho ko, meron isang maugong na pangalan na doktor na [nag-offer] ng injection, na hindi ako ooperahan. Sabi niya it's very safe, because it's silicone or collagen, I don't know what he calls it," she said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.
She added that she had heard similar complaints from fellow celebrities who had undergone procedures under this doctor. Sevilla, however, is the first known artist to publicly admit complications caused by cosmetic procedures.
She said she had initially been afraid to disclose her problems, but now wants to raise awareness about the lack of government regulation on unauthorized or illegal medical procedures and clinics.
"Matagal ko na ring tinatago ang problema ko kasi nararamdaman ko na ito'y kakaiba, at malaking gamutan ito financially. At saka unang una ay takot [ako] to admit na out of my vanity, ito yung nagyayari sa akin ngayon," she said.

Although she had been feeling symptoms over the course of 11 years, she said her problem worsened recently when she experienced stinging pain on her buttocks. This, she said, had severely affected her career as a sexy singer.
"Hindi ako makapag-suot ng fitting. Hindi na ako makapag-show sa mga lugar tulad ng Boracay, so na-limit talaga siya because of this," she said.
"Kapag malamig, ang tigas-tigas ng puwet ko. Pagdating ko sa Pilipinas nawawala. Minsan akala mo wala na siya, pero sumisiksik lang pala ang infection. Una mong kalaban ang takot eh. Hanggang ito na nga, nangangati siya sa loob, para siyang kagat ng lamok na nagspread. My butt was black and blue," she added.
Based on Sevilla's account, the silicone gel had caused an infection and started eating at her tissues. "At pagkatapos nito, kakalat sa ibang parte ng katawan mo - sa ugat, sa dugo - hanggang isang araw, hindi mo na alam na ito na pala ang mitsa ng buhay mo," she said.
The singer said she will have to undergo 2 to 3 months of hospital treatment for her condition. She received some help from the Philippine Association of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgeons (PAPRAS), who focused on reconstructive plastic surgery.
She also decided to come forward because she was encouraged by Josie Norcio, who is suing the BMG for a botched buttock augmentation surgery performed in 2003 and 2005. Sevilla said she wants to encourage her fellow victims, who have limited connections and means, to file complaints against their cosmetic doctors. -- Report from Alex Santos, ABS-CBN News.
