MANILA - An official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) welcomed a report stating that the country’s population will officially reach 100 million.

CBCP Episcopal Commission on Family and Life Executive Secretary Father Melvin Castro said the news is a "blessing and a demographic dividend."

In an interview with Radio Veritas, Castro said the country is set to become an economic powerhouse because of its population.

"100-million population, it’s good for the economy. Ibig sabihin niyan meron tayong young workers basta bigyan mo ng opportunity for education, for work, employment," he said.

He said the country needs enough young population to sustain the economy.

He noted more countries are now erasing the notion that poverty can equate to a large population.

"Hindi na issue ngayon ang population, internationally tinatawag ito ng mga economist na demographic dividend. A young population can actually be economically strong," he said.

He said the likes of Japan and China are now feeling the effects of their population control policies.

"Tulad ng China, sa ginawa nilang one-child policy noon, kaya ngayon medyo nire-relax nila ang one-child policy, which means hindi bad news ang population. Sa kasamaang palad na-brainwash tayo since the 1970s na malaking population is equated with poverty," Castro said.
