MANILA – Former President Joseph Estrada offered a mass for former President Corazon Aquino on Sunday at the Sto. Niño Church in Tondo, Manila.

“Gusto ipakita ni President Estrada na ang mahihirap at mayayaman ay nagkakaisa sa pagdarasal para kay President Aquino (President Estrada wants to show that the rich and the poor are one in praying for President Aquino),” said Estrada spokesperson Margaux Salcedo.

“Ito ay alay na dasal ng mga mahihirap o ng masa para kay President Cory (The mass tomorrow is being offered by the poor of Tondo for President Cory),” Salcedo added.

Employees of Maynilad Water Services, Inc. also lit candles and set up an altar with the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary at a driveway of Makati Medical Center for Mrs. Aquino, who continues to battle colon cancer.

The Maynilad employees also prayed the rosary every 30 minutes, said an ANC report.

The Aquino family is set to issue a statement on the condition of the former president “very soon,” said Eldon Cruz, Aquino’s son-in-law.

Cruz told reporters on Saturday that Aquino was okay, although she was under pain management. He said Aquino’s daughter, Kris, is taking care of the ailing leader round the clock.

Reports reaching ABS-CBN News said Kris will not report for work on Sunday’s “The Buzz” entertainment talk show.

Meantime, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, who visited Aquino at the Makati Medical Center, said “Everything looked fine and normal.”

He added that Aquino was asleep during his entire visit on Saturday at her private room on the ninth floor.

Binay has ordered to have masses for Aquino at the Makati City Hall quadrangle for nine working days beginning Monday, July 27. The mass on Monday will be celebrated at 7:45 a.m. while the succeeding masses will begin at 12 p.m.

Aquino was diagnosed with colon cancer in March last year. She was admitted to the Makati Medical Center last month for loss of appetite. -- With a report from ANC Headlines
