SC moves Hacienda Luisita case hearing to Aug. 18
MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court hearing on the oral arguments regarding the distribution of Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac has been moved to August 18.
The Supreme Court earlier said it needed to check the ownership status of the sugar estate, and directed parties to submit documents and several pieces of evidence.
The hearing on the oral arguments was originally set on August 3.
Hacienda Luisita was spared from actual land redistribution under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program since the Cojuangco family and farmers opted for a non-land transfer scheme called stock distribution option (SDO).
In 2005, however, the Presidential Agrarian Reform Council ruled to place the entire Hacienda Luisita under compulsory acquisition for distribution to farmers.
The SC issued a temporary restraining order in 2006.
The high court said the oral arguments are needed in order to have the counsels thresh out the issues.
President Benigno Aquino III and his sisters own a very small share in Hacienda Luisita, one of the largest sugar estates in the country.
