Arroyo leaves wellness center, visits dad's grave
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Former President and now-Pampanga 2nd District Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has left a health and wellness center in Tagaytay Friday morning to visit her constituents in Lubao, Pampanga.
A report by ABS-CBN correspondent Jerome Lantin said Mrs. Arroyo left the health center on board a Land Cruiser at around 8:30 a.m.
The former President first visited the grave of her father, the late President Diosdado Macapagal, at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani in Taguig City.
She said she was "very happy to be with my parents even just in spirit." Mrs. Arroyo had been under hospital detention for the last 8 months.
She prayed for a few minutes at the Libingan's adoration chapel then left for the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC).
Her spokeswoman, Elena Bautista Horn, earlier said Mrs. Arroyo plans to visit her constituents in Lubao, Pampanga. She said doctors allowed Mrs. Arroyo to travel to Pampanga but told her to continue wearing her neck brace, avoid talking too much, and undergo more physical therapy.
"Hindi mapakali ang dating pangulo dahil iniisip nya na marami pa syang dapat gawin para sa kanyang mga kababayan. She says that it is her sworn duty as an elected lawmaker to make up for her absence while in detention," she said.
Mrs. Arroyo was freed on bail Wednesday after a regional trial court judge deemed the evidence in the electoral sabotage case against her as weak.
President Aquino expressed dismay over Pasay Regional Trial Court branch 112 Judge Jesus Mupas’ decision, saying the judge used a very high standard of proof for the bail petition.
The Commission on Elections has already filed a motion of reconsideration, questioning the judge’s decision.
