MANILA - The Quarant' Ore or the Forty Hours' Devotion for former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino at the EDSA Shrine in Mandaluyong City continued as scheduled despite her death early Saturday.

"Today is the first Saturday, and she died 3 in the morning, which is a beautiful sign. The prayers go on. The more she needs the prayers for the repose of her soul," Ching Zapanta, organizer of the 40-hour prayer vigil, told radio dzMM.

Zapanta said the prayer vigil will end with a noon Mass at the EDSA Shrine. The prayer vigil started with a Mass at 7 p.m. Thursday.

"We started it with a Mass. We will finish it with a Mass. We have a 12:15 p.m. Mass," she said.

Zapanta said there was a continuous flow of supporters joining the vigil since Thursday night. She estimated the visitors at 1,000 and she expects more will come by noon.

Mrs. Aquino died at 3:18 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 1, 2009) at the Makati Medical Center due to colon cancer.

Her remains have been brought to the Heritage Park mortuary and crematorium at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City.

Senator Noynoy Aquino asked the public to give the family a brief time of privacy with his late mother.

He said details of Mrs. Aquino’s wake will be announced by noon.

Lourdes Siytangco said she and Mrs. Aquino’s niece, Maria Montelibano, have been tasked to give out details of the wake to the media.

State Funeral

I appeal to the heirs and successors of our former President Corazon Aquino to reconsider their decision to have a private burial for their mother. I appeal to them to allow the Government and the State to give her the honour that befits her most: a State burial complete with the full panoply of State paraphernalia and regalia. For she is not just her heirs’s mothers; she is also our former President. To bury her in a private burial, with out State burial, will be to deprive the Filipino peoples of expressing their thanks to her. So, I appeal to the Aquino children to allow the State to give their mother, who is our President also, the burial fitting for her: a State burial, and not just a private burial.
