PAL cancels 11 flights after pilots' 'indiscriminate' resignations
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Flag-carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) cancelled 11 domestic and international flights on Saturday after several of its pilots "indiscriminately" resigned.
A radio dzMM report said 4 of the cancelled domestic flights were bound for Cebu (PR 843), Cagayan (PR 181), Bacolod City (PR 133) and Iloilo (PR 147).
The other 4 cancelled domestic flights were supposed to arrive from Cebu (PR 344), Cagayan (PR 182), Bacolod (PR 134) and Iloilo (PR 148).
Two flights from Hong Kong to Manila (PR 313 AND PR 319) and another flight bound for Hong Kong (PR 318) have also been cancelled.
In an interview on cable news channel ANC, PAL spokesman Jonathan Gesmundo said all of the cancelled flights involve A320 aircrafts.
"Unfortunately we have had recent indiscriminate resignations of A320 pilots, and we are now faced with inadequate flight deck crew to man A320 aircrafts," Gesmundo said.
He would not say how many pilots have resigned, but assured that "it's just a small number."
Vic Lima, host of radio dzMM program "Tandem", said he received reports that at least 7 pilots resigned from PAL.
Gesmundo said the pilots' resignations had nothing to do with the management's ongoing labor dispute with the Philippine Airlines Employees' Association (PALEA).
He explained that only "ground" personnel are members of the PALEA.
He said the A320 aircraft pilots left PAL because they were poached by foreign-owned airlines. He said the pilots were offered bigger salaries "that we cannot match."
Protest vs outsourcing?
Sources in the PAL employees' union told Agence France-Presse the resignations were in reaction to a plan by the airline to lay off thousands of employees and outsource their positions.
President Benigno Aquino said the government was meeting with PAL management to arrange a new schedule to make up for the lost pilots.
He also said the transport and labour departments would be looking into the matter.
Charges against resigned pilots
In a statement released after the interview, Gesmundo said indiscriminate resignation is a violation of the pilots' contract with PAL, as well as "pertinent government regulations."
Gesmundo said that the pilots should have given PAL 6 months to train their replacements.
"PAL will soon be filing appropriate charges against those pilots who chose not to report for work immediately after submitting resignation letters," he said.
He added: "Most of the pilots still owe PAL the cost of their aviation school training, which run into millions of pesos per pilot."
Gesmundo said that because of the indiscriminate resignation of the pilots, PAL is thinking of temporarily grounding some of its A320 aircrafts.
He said it would take "several months" before other pilots get trained to fly A320 aircrafts.
"It will take several months to train pilots. We have our own school, the PAL Aviation School in Clark," he said.
Meanwhile, Gesmundo said the PAL management has been trying to advise all passengers of the cancelled flights.
He said that the passengers affected by the flight cancellations may be able to leave on Sunday morning flights.
He added that they are thinking of using "bigger" aircrafts for Sunday's flights to accommodate the affected passengers.
"PAL is currently adjusting its schedules by merging some flights or upgrading the aircraft to a bigger type in order to lessen the inconvenience to affected passengers," Gesmundo said.
The local aviation sector has been embroiled in several controversies in recent months such as a shortage of air navigation equipment at Manila airport and growing labour unrest at PAL, the largest domestic carrier. – with reports from Alex Calda, radio dzMM; ANC; Agence France-Presse
Pilots leaving pal
I saw the news this morning about the pilots leaving Pal. Please give these pilots the chance to speak for themselves. Check their situations because it is not as if Pal is on the losing end. Last February of this year, the Pal management gave a directive ((1st batch) to LAS MARIAS, TUMPALAN, TRONO, CANLAS, ESELLER AND LOYOLA that effective immediately on Mar. 1,2010, they will no longer receive PAL salary (leave without) and that they will have to fly with Airphilippines for a much lesser salary. These pilots where caught by surprised, leaving them with no options. They where not allowed to work in other companies because Pal management said they have a binding contract with them. This was the start of the demoralization of morals and confidence of the Pal workforce. Check these pilots mentioned because they are now in Airphil. Now the Pal management gave another directive that these pilots should be receiving the old rate they are enjoying, when in fact, all together they have cut the benefits these pilots used to enjoy. The rate mentioned this morning is not the Airbus 320 rate, they are earning much lesser than that. My countrymen, please don’t judge these pilots because there families are struggling. They cannot voice out there rights simply because they are left with no options from the shrewd management of Pal. They have families to protect, families to survive and all because these shrewd management of Pal pressed them down to their limits that their families can no longer survive.
The truth why PAL pilots are leaving
1. A few months ago PAL management had the bright idea of moving some PAL pilots to sister company Air Philippines. Unfortunately with lesser pay and benefits. This is why the pilots are leaving. The opportunities in other airlines have been there for years but it is only now that a significant number are leaving. I wish the media could get the views of pilots. Since pilots don't have a union or even a representative, only view of PAL management are being shown. The pay will always be higher abroad. This is the same for doctors, nurses etc.. Pilots were happy in PAL till the management did these things
2. What Mr. Gesmundo is saying is wrong! Graduates of PAL aviation school paid for their own training. They do not owe PAL anything! In fact there are 40+ graduates still waiting to be employed.
3. Airline pilot license needs to be renewed every six months. If pilots wait for six months to leave after giving their resignation, their license will not be valid anymore.

New term by PAL!
Congratulations PAL for coining a NEW term! Try Google search for "indiscriminate resignation" (with quotes) and you will find only two pages (as of the moment) referring to this use of the term by PAL.
I wonder how indiscriminate a person can be about their jobs? Maybe Filipinos (or maybe pilots) can be that carefree about something as serious as work!
lucky me
it's time for the management to admit their faults. this maybe even be the time for Lucio Tan to let go of PAL. change of management. remove the politics within the company. the politics of being chinese. kasi diyan sa PAL, the higher the percentage of chinese blood you have, the better your position and/or salary will be. they will even invent a new position for you (if you're chinese), i think i know around 5 cases of this when i was there back then. i know these things, i've been part of them.
mismanagement.
maybe PNoy can do something about this (to as far as sequestering our "FLAG CARRIER" from a chinese owner).
time to sell PAL to maybe Mr. MVP.
otherwise. this ship's going down, and with it our pride (of having a heritage-rich flag carrier).
just a reminder
Please be reminded that PAL is a private company and is no longer owned by the Philippine government. It was sold by the government mainly because it can no longer subsidise a government airline run by politicos. Maybe you should suggest that Cebu Pacific or Zesto Airlines be the Flag Carrier.
panahon na talaga ng pagbabago (repost)
go PNoy
i think it should be A320
i think it should be A320 aircrafts/pilots (Airbus 320) and not 8320
