MANILA - Family and friends gathered here at the Manila Memorial Park Friday to remember the life and legacy of the late President Corazon Aquino.

A mass was held presided over by a close friend of the Aquinos, Father Catalino Arevalo.

In his homily, Father Arevalo spoke of how the people's love for Cory has gone deeper and stronger and that gratitude for the icon of democracy did not end five years ago.

Arevalo recounted Cory's words when she spoke of how she drew strength and courage from the Filipino people and how it sparked hope even in trying times.

He said Cory's death offered not a sense of loss and defeat but a sense of anticipation and hope that things would be better.

There was no speaking opportunity for President Benigno Aquino III today. Instead, his sister, Kris, asked the people to continue to support her brother. She also thanked those who came dressed in yellow.

Today's activity ended with the singing of "Bayan Ko," the protest song of the People Power Revolution and struggle for democracy.

The family will be coming back to the memorial park on August 21 to commemorate the death anniversary of Ninoy Aquino.
