MANILA - Two resolutions have been filed in the House of Representatives seeking to declare former President Corazon Aquino a national hero.

House Joint Resolution No. 41—A Joint Resolution extolling former President Corazon Aquino, her leadership, and her contributions in restoring and strengthening Philippine Democracy, and urging the House of Representatives and the Senate of the Philippines to proclaim Corazon C. Aquino as a Hero of the Republic of the Philippines—was filed by Rep. Rodolfo Plaza.

“President Aquino is recognized  all over the Philippines as having lived for Democracy and for the People which her husband and fellow freedom fighter, Benigno S. Aquino Jr., believed, are worth dying for,” the resolution states.

Declaring President Aquino as a national hero is “a way of ensuring the continuity of her legacy of democracy and love of country,” it says.

House Joint Resolution No. 42—A Joint Resolution to recognize the valuable contribution of President Corazon C. Aquino by declaring her as a National Hero—was filed by Rep. Liwayway Chato.

“The most recognized symbol of freedom and democracy that led to the downfall of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986, President Corazon C. Aquino had showed throughout her life and death the true hallmarks of modern heroism,” the resolution states.

President Aquino is also recognized as a democracy icon in the international community. She received numerous citations and recognitions including TIME Woman of the Year in 1986, the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding in 1996, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in 1998, and her nomination to the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986.

The two measures are expected to be consolidated and reported out for plenary approval next week, according to a statement by House Speaker Prospero Nograles. A similar resolution is also expected from the Senate.

Another resolution, House Joint Resolution 40, also seeks to declare January 25 as “Cory Aquino Day.” It was initiated by Quezon Rep. Lorenzo Tañada III. He is a son of Wigberto Tañada, who served as customs commissioner during the Aquino administration and won as senator in 1987 under the Cory ticket.

In the Senate, Senator Loren Legarda filed Senate Resolution No. 1252 expressing “sincerest gratitude” to President Aquino and “deepest condolences” to her family.

“President Cory has been a constant moral force in the life of our nation, consistent in here ideals of courage, simplicity, faithfulness, and compassion; her public service record was exemplary and untainted by any wrongdoing; and she was a staunch advocate of democracy, peace, good governance, and women empowerment,” the resolution reads.

"President Aquino, was a unifying force for Filipinos of all political affiliations and sectors; an unfailing figure of prayerfulness and faith in God; and humanity owes to Maria Corazon Cojuangco Aquino the gift of people power and peaceful revolution as means for exercising their sovereign power,” it adds. -- abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak

A fitting title for a leader who did so much

To E1Kenobi: no, the Marcos was not suspected to have cheated. THEY DID CHEATED US AND ROBBED US BLIND FOR 20 YEARS OF OUR DIGNITY AND NATIONAL TREASURY. NOT ONLY THAT, THEY WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF THOUSANDS OF FILIPINOS WHO'S ONLY SINS WERE THEY DARE SPEAK THEIR MIND AGAINST THE MARCOSES. THEY WERE LIKE US TALKING, ONLY THERE WERE NO INTERNET BACK THEN AND THEY DONT HIDE BEHIND THEIR COMPUTERS WHEN THEY TALK.

"Installing Cory was way too much" - Nope, it's actually too little. We can never repay what Cory did for the country, ever. Imagine if Marcos' clan was still in power. You will not probably be here trashing Cory since all comments will be filtered and censored like in North Korea.

"She was not able to pin the crime to Marcos" - JFK's assassination was still also not solved until today. When powerful men are behind evil deeds, they have all the resources to keep witnesses silent.

"let us act not fools" - yes, that is why we must remember what happened in our long dark history with the Marcoses so they will not happen again. Only a fool will say "hey, it did not happen...let us elect these Marcoses and these rotten corrupt politicians who challenged Cory because they say in their litany it will help rebuild the country." - Wow, if that happens I will have to say Cory's and Ninoy's struggles probably were in vain.

WHoa! Hold your horses.

Okay I understand that President Cory is well loved and well respected by many, but installing her as a national hero, common? Making her birthday a holiday.... damn! this is going way to out of hand. Please can we hold our emotions and start knocking some senses in our noggins. Are we seriously going to teach the future of our society that its okay to go grab power from a government that we"SUSPECT" to have cheated? I mean, Mrs. Aquino was president for 6 years and she was not able to pin the crime cleanly on her predecessor Mr. Marcos the Ninoy murder case.... and why do everybody think that's the case? It's really hard to find something that is not there... we can bend all the facts but it was never it. So installing Cory as a hero is way too much...but if they insist on this then I suggest every president of the republic be accosted the same honor, and yes including the big bad wolf (Marcos).

We Filipinos sometimes loves to over-react, we let our emotion get the best of our sensibility , this is why our country is in the state that it is now. Lets not act like fools ? lets mourn because our former leader had passed but lets guard ourselves from committing acts that would make as look foolish. I love president Cory but she is no hero...she is no Jose Rizal or Bonifacio she is not even close to this great heroes of our country; But yes we all love her and admire her. Lets give this thing its proper due and tomorrow lets continue on the great task of rebuilding our nation again.
