Palace reiterates PNoy against abortion
MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang objected Wednesday to disinformation about President Aquino allegedly favoring abortion.
“Let me just clarify lang that the President is against abortion. Because there is disinformation going around that the President is for abortion. Let me categorically state that in his first point in [his] five-point [position, he said] ‘I am against abortion,’” Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said.
Lacierda said the President has no preference towards a particular method of family planning. He said the President wants couples to be informed of all methods of family planning and decide on their own which method to use.
He also pointed out that the President is in favor of establishing natural family planning centers.
“Just to allay the fears that the President has taken the position one way, he has not. It is again a decision [for] us, the parents, to choose,” Lacierda said.
The spokesman did not disclose details of the caucus that the President is holding with members of the Liberal Party on whether the Reproductive Health bill would be discussed.
He said he would first have to check what would be discussed.
He also declined to comment on a reported statement coming from the Archbishop Socrates Villegas equating corruption with contraception.
Lacierda declined to comment on a reported UN position supporting the RH bill. He merely echoed the position of the President who expressed his wish for the period of debates to be closed.
He added that the Palace is letting the people decide.
Asked if the Palace is confident that the RH measure would be passed, Lacierda said the Palace would rather wait for the vote.
