MANILA, Philippines - A shortlist of names for the replacement of Chief Justice Renato Corona may finally be released this week with members of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) finally deciding to meet on Friday.

The members have scheduled a meeting on Friday at 11:00 a.m.

The body that vets names for the judiciary reset its meeting several times, including today, because of the inclement weather.

The meeting last Monday was first reset to today after Sen. Francis Escudero asked for more time to study the qualifications of the candidates. The Supreme Court earlier allowed one vote only for the two Houses of Congress, then subsequently reversed its ruling.

JBC member Justice Regino C. Hermosisima, Jr. was also absent last Monday.

JBC reset meetings several times in the past to give way to the decision of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in connection with the disbarment cases against Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, who is believed to be the chosen one of President Benigno Aquino III.

The IBP later junked de Lima's petition to dismiss the consolidated disbarment complaints, which  may affect her chances of becoming chief justice.

Under JBC rules, a candidate with an administrative case should be disqualified. This was what happened in the past to former Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera, who vied for a post in the SC but only to be blocked by an administrative case.

Sources said, however, that de Lima may yet join the shortlist.
