Mitos clarifies 'Heaven crying' statement
MANILA, Philippines - Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay is crying foul over attacks made on her statement on Twitter, which was linked to her opposition to the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill.
On Tuesday, Magsaysay posted the statement: “Heaven must be crying, we should undo what has been done" after torrential rains and heavy floods hit Metro Manila and surrounding provinces.
Magsaysay said she was subjected to irate attacks from Reproductive Health Bill supporters when an online news story came out correlating her statement to the debates over the bill.
Majority of the members of the House of Representatives decided to terminate the debates on Monday, a giant leap for the controversial bill. This, amid criticisms from the likes of Magsaysay.
"I was very surprised when the slant of the article attributed my comment to the bill when in fact I was referring to the state of calamity that Metro Manila and nearby provinces, even my district in Zambales was experiencing," Magsaysay said.
She said: "I was shocked that an innocent comment about undoing the effects of the abuses suffered by Mother Nature in the hands of mankind would be taken so far out of context. I was not even asked about what I meant before it was all posted online."
She said she was made to appear as a villain when she was just commenting on the wrath of nature, which has also affected her own constituents.
"I was made to appear the villain because of a misinterpretation of my statement and it is very sad that I am being attacked for a personal interpretation that was not even verified before it was posted. With the speed that information is spread across the internet and the damage that this has caused my reputation, I hope I will be given a chance to make this clarification in the interest of fairness, if not for anything else,” she said.
