'Habagat' death toll climbs to 66

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The death toll in the heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon has climbed to 66, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Saturday.

Of the total, 11 were victims of landslides; 47 died due to drowning; four were victims of electrocution; 2 died from heart attack; one killed due to fallen trees; and one case of undetermined death.

The NDRRMC also said that six people were injured from landslides, vehicular accident and snake bite.

Meanwhile, nine people remain missing.

Hardest-hit by the floods, which have affected almost 2.5 million people, is Central Luzon, where more than 1.5 million people were affected.

More than 384,000 have sought shelter in evacuation centers, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
