Lifting PNoy term limit won't fly: Drilon

MANILA - Senate President Franklin Drilon said that a social media campaign to lift the term limit of President Aquino will not fly.

Drilon said the President has long been averse to Charter change. He also said there is no more time for Charter change and that to do so would "derail" Congress from its other priorities.

"Ang panawagan na magkaroon ng bagong term ang Pangulo, to lift the term limits, sa pagkaalam ko, the President is averse to any constitutional change. That in this proposal, while I find the social media to be very active on this issue, this is a matter which will be addressed to a political leader, the president. And the President, we all know, is averse to any amendment to the Constitution," he said.

"So I don’t see this proposal on the social media getting very far. Ang pag-amyenda ng Saligang Batas, sa lahat ng mga naririnig ko sa Palasyo, ayaw naman ng Pangulo."

Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas earlier proposed that Aquino should stay longer in Malacañang so that he could continue his "tuwid na daan" governance.

Some people, through the "One More Term for PNoy" page on Facebook, have also been calling for the "re-election" of Aquino.

The Constitution limits the president to only one 6-year term.

Vice President Jejomar Binay, however, branded the proposal as "selfish" and politically divisive. He said Aquino is not the type of person who will cling to power.

"Those who made the proposal don't know the President. He is a decent person and will not cling to power. He is a student of history, and he won't tarnish his mother's good name just to please some personalities," he said.
