Ombudsman urged to probe P1M dinner
MANILA - A party-list congressman on Wednesday filed a letter of complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for the lavish dinner she had at a prestigious restaurant in New York during her recent US trip.
Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello asked Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez to look into Mrs. Arroyo's possible violation of Republic Act 6713, which sets public officials' code of conduct and ethical standards.
Bello said Mrs. Arroyo violated RA 6713's Section 4-H (Simple Living), which states that "public officials and employees and their families shall lead modest lives appropriate to their positions and income."
The law adds, ”They shall not indulge in extravagant or ostentatious display of wealth in any form."
The congressman said Mrs. Arroyo's dinner at the Le Cirque restaurant, which allegedly cost $20,000 or almost P1 million, is obviously not "living a modest life."
Bello added that even if the dinner was paid for by Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, the lavish dinner can still be used against the President as it is a violation of the Revised Penal Code's Section 211 or indirect bribery, which prohibits public officials from accepting gifts offered to them by reason of their official position.
The congressman, meanwhile, said they are aware the Ombudsman may refuse to investigate Mrs. Arroyo's possible violations because of her presidential immunity.
However, he said they wanted to put on record the complaint, which may be revived after Mrs. Arroyo steps down in June 2010. -- report from Sheryll Mundo, ABS-CBN News

may mangyari kaya? una, daming gawain sa office ni sumbungan ng bayan, baka magkaamag lang yang case nyo. pangalawa, ombudsman, iimbestigahan arroyo... klasmeyt nga sila ni FG! naman naman! ano sa tingin yo? nek nek nyo!

From Marcos regime to Cory, did we hear any journalist make an accounting or filing a report of extravagant expenses whenever they go to foreign countries? Never, right? I bet those presidents were not fasting every time they go to foreign countries. And, during the last regime, have we read any news of any corruption? If not for Chavit Singson, a former friend of Erap, we would have not known the truth? Hanggang ngayon nagtatamasa pa sila, di ba? Ang aso pag may tangan-tangan na buto ay natural na hindi tatahol kasi mahuhulog yong buto. Investigative journalism...really? The timing of these reports are suspect in themselves... I smell something fishy here and IT STINKS TERRIBLY!!! Pare-pareho lang ang pulitiko. It's just a matter of choosing the lesser evil and I DON'T BELIEVE those meals makes Arroyo the worst of them all.
FREEDOM OF SPITS
I was merely 2 years old when Ka Ferdie declared Martial Law. Today I realized why did the former strongman takes control of all radio and TV station including the Lopez's owned ABS-CBN. I think its not about greed...rather he just wanted to take control of the much "Abused Freedom of Speech".
What the media is practicing is rather is the "FREEDOM OF SPITS". Walang pakundangang paninira ng puri for the sake of getting the attention and audience of the masses for profit in the pretense of Investigative Journalism (I call it Irresponsible Journalism). If the government tries for fight back, you (media people) immediately cries foul and claims political harassment. Kung pabayaan naman kayo, you go too far. Kaya maraming napapatay na media practitioners dahil na rin sa walang pakundangan nyong bumatikos akala nyo santo na kayo. Tapos you put blame to the government.

Kaya yun US$ 35 per person eh, pwede na sana at decent naman. Eh eto eh kung may malasakit sila sa mga Pilipinong nagugutom! kaya lang wala talagang malasakit.
