Why number of couples getting married is going down

MANILA -- The number of couples getting married--and registering their marriage--is decreasing, an official from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said.

In an interview on radio DZMM on Wednesday, Director Lourdes Hufana of the Civil Registration Department of PSA, said that the number of marriage registrations has been decreasing since 2010.

"Yung mga nagpapakasal, kumukuha [ng Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR)], pero looking at the statistics, decreasing ang number ng nagpaparehistro ng kasal," Hufana said.

They have also noticed an increase in the number of children born out of wedlock.

Atty. Danny Concepcion of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law, said that this decrease may be due to the fact that annulment is very expensive in the Philippines.

"Natatakot sila na baka sila naman ay hindi magkasundo, eh napakamahal ng annulment," he said.

He added that some couples tend to be more practical, and are avoiding the expenses connected with weddings.

Hufana, on the other hand, believes that the increase in the number of marriage requirements is also a factor in this decrease.

"Mas mahigpit ang requirements, wala pang CENOMAR dati, kaya 'yung mga lalaki, kahit maraming beses magpakasal, hindi nahuhuli. Eh ngayon, may CENOMAR tayo bago pa man kumuha ng lisensya, may asawa na 'yan eh, huling huli," Hufana said.
