Palace: LTO chief will be given due process
MANILA - Despite her admission that she was the one seen in a video playing in a casino, Land Transportation Office chief Virginia Torres will not be immediately axed but will be given due process.
Malacañang said Transportation Secretary Jun Abaya, as Torres' immediate superior, will be looking into the video and will determine if she had violated Memorandum Circular No. 8 issued by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo prohibiting officials from staying and playing in casinos.
"Jun Abaya will provide the due process, will look into it. Syempre tatanungin. 'Yung ang proseso. Hindi mo naman pwede kaagad sibakin. There's a process for looking into this, investigating," Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
Torres is said to be a close friend of President Aquino.
Reminded of Aquino's directive that no special treatment be given to anyone violating the law, Lacierda said, "That's correct. I totally agree…but there's also a thing called due process."
