MANILA - On Friday, yellow will once again be the color of the day.

In commemoration of the 26th anniversary of the assassination of former senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., the Benigno Aquino Jr. Foundation will celebrate the "Araw ng Dilaw" on Friday.

The day will also be a day to honor the memory of Ninoy's wife, former president Corazon Aquino, who passed away last August 1.

A mass will be offered at the Don Bosco Chapel in Makati in the morning, where members of the Aquino family are expected to attend.

They will also send representatives to different activities set to commemorate Ninoy Aquino Day.

Raphael Lopa, the foundation's executive director, urged the public to wear yellow and to light yellow candles as a way to keep Ninoy and Cory's legacy alive.

""When you wear yellow, in a way its your stamp, of saying na 'Oo, pinaniniwalaan ko ang ginawa ni Ninoy at ni Cory,' at sa pamamagitan ng pagsuot ng dilaw, susubukan ko rin sa abot ng aking makakaya na maging katulad nila Ninoy at ni Cory," Lopa said.

Motorists are also encouraged to turn on their hazard signal lights between 6 and 7 p.m. Friday, to spread what the foundation calls the "yellow spark."

In Makati, meanwhile, no roads will be closed but around 200 policemen will be assigned around the city.

Other activities set for Friday are a gathering led by NBN-ZTE whistleblower Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada Jr. at the EDSA Shrine at 12 noon and a gathering of different groups at the Ninoy Aquino Monument at 3 p.m.

Pre-August 21 activities

In the lead-up to the activities on Friday, TindigNation organized activities Thursday.

At noon, the group set up "Freedom Walls" at the corners of Ayala and Paseo de Roxas Avenues in Makati City to allow the public to share their thoughts and ideas on the commemoration of the death of Ninoy Aquino.

Freedom walls have also been set up at several bus stops along Ayala Avenue.

"Gagawin siyang tribute bukas, dahil magkakaroon ng wreath-laying ang pamilyang Aquino, ibibigay namin ito as a tribute sa kanilang pamilya," TindigNation convenor Omi Castañar said.

The group then gathered at the Makati Fire Station at 5 p.m., where they started their silent march towards the Ninoy Aquino Monument along Ayala Avenue.

They were joined by members of the Black and White Movement, Laban ng Masa and the group Former Senior Government Officials under President Arroyo.

The groups carried placards and tarpaulins with messages thanking the Aquino couple for what they have done to help keep democracy alive in the country.

At the Ninoy Aquino Monument, they gave away plants which they said symbolized the need of Filipinos to take care of democracy.

Their activity ended with a candle lighting ceremony and the singing of "Bayan Ko."

Former social welfare secretary Dinky Soliman said this year, the commemoration of Ninoy Aquino Day is more meaningful due to what she calls the ongoing threat to democracy.

"Dapat lamang, kung tunay tayong naniniwala sa diwa at pinanindigan ni Ninoy at ni Cory, dapat lahat tayo ay maging mapagbantay, at huwag hayaan na ang ating demokrasya ay mayurak at maalis mula sa atin," Soliman said. With reports from Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News
