MANILA, Philippines -- Malacanang will not hesitate to do its own independent examination on the health of former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo if and when the Arroyo camp insists on having the former president treated in a hospital outside the Philippines.

The Makati Medical Center already said the opinion of the Arroyo doctors will not, in any way, reflect its own, Presidential Spokesman Sec. Edwin Lacierda noted.

If the former president insists on leaving the country for medical reasons, they will be compelled to do their examination on Arroyo.

"We will have to do independent assessment of her condition," he said, "We will wait for the next step of the former president.”

Last year, a medical team from the Department of Health led by Health Sec. Enrique Ona did a thorough health check on the former President when she insisted to be treated abroad due to her neck problem.

Malacanang said they are not fully convinced at this point in time that Arroyo should be treated somewhere else outside the country.

"The Makati Medical Center and the Philippine Medical Association both claim that they have the capability to treat Arroyo," Lacierda noted.
