MANILA - Senator Alan Peter Cayetano wants a former colleague to lead a special investigation into the pork barrel scam.

Cayetano will file a resolution to urge the now jobless former Senator Panfilo Lacson as the special independent investigator.

He said he will also file a resolution calling for the abolition of the pork barrel, a move that may see rough sailing in the Senate.

"These two measures are drastic but necessary ways to ensure that the benefits of our country's economic growth and the people's money are not hijacked by a few elites but would go directly to those people who have been left behind,” he said.

Some senators were earlier lukewarm to an investigation that could link colleagues to the scam.

In a statement Tuesday, however, Senator Teofisto Guingona III said the recent disclosure of the Commission on Audit (COA) on the alleged billions of misused pork barrel has prompted them to begin the probe.

The Blue Ribbon Committee will begin the probe on August 29.

For his part, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has also urged past and present legislators to submit themselves to the Office of the Ombudsman to prove they are accountable to the public.

Meanwhile, Senator Nancy Binay said she supports President Benigno Aquino III’s move to suspend the disbursement of the pork funds.

“I fully support PNoy's decision to suspend PDAF as long as it's not selective at dapat lahat—pati na yung mga kaalyado ng administrasyon. Malaking bagay rin na maipasa na kaagad ang FOI bill to help ensure transparency in government,” she said. - with reports from Pinky Webb, ABS-CBN News
