Ex-gov't officials laud PNoy's call to abolish pork
MANILA -- A group of former government officials lauded President Benigno Aquino III's call for the abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel of lawmakers.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Former Senior Government Officials (FSGO) said they support the President's proposal to set up a new system in place of the existing pork barrel system.
Under the new system, lawmakers can still propose projects for their constituents but these will be subject to several restrictions.
"We applaud the steps he has outlined to put up an alternative system that is transparent and accountable," FSGO said.
The former government officials earlier launched a petition on Change.org urging the Office of the Ombudsman to conduct an impartial probe on the alleged P10 billion pork barrel scam involving several lawmakers and businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles.
The petition was started by former education undersecretary Isagani Cruz, former education secretary Edilberto de Jesus, former environment secretary Fulgencio Factoran Jr., former senator and trade and industry minister Vicente Paterno and former finance secretary Jesus Estanislao.
"We urge the immediate filing of charges against the persons named by the Commission on Audit as responsible for having used the people's money for there own personal interests," FSGO said.
