Arroyo to return to NY; no more Le Cirque?
MANILA - This time, no more stopover at Le Cirque.
Malacañang has learned its lesson, or so says Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, who doubts President Arroyo will again dine at the fine dining restaurant when she visits New York anew in September for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly.
"Don't tell me whether she is going back to Le Cirque. I don't think she is going. But the President is going to speak before the United Nations General Assembly, and this is not the first time she is speaking before the United Nations," Ermita said in a press briefing on Wednesday.
President Arroyo and US President Barack Obama are expected to see each other again at the UN headquarters. She will also be in the company of other world leaders during the meeting.
This time, Malacañang said it is going to send a lean delegation unlike Mrs. Arroyo's last trip to the US, where a number of lawmakers tagged along, hoping but failing to grab a photo opportunity with the popular American leader.
"Without telling you the details, considering what had been talked about in the media on the previous trips, siguro naman eh people will understand why they should or why they should not insist on joining. We'll just leave it to them," he said.
Saudi trip 'can't miss'
The president is also scheduled to fly to the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia in late September.
Ermita said the President cannot afford to miss the Saudi Arabia trip, citing trade opportunities and high-level talks that would benefit the more than a million overseas workers there.
And since it was the King of Saudi Arabia who invited the president and who will pay for the state visit, Malacañang says it cannot impose its own protocol or program for this event just to address criticism surrounding the president's trips.
"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a sovereign state. And they have their own protocols to follow. They don't have to be necessarily influenced by anything that's been written about the trip of the President. I think that's very, very sure," Ermita said.
"In year 2006 when the President went to Saudi Arabia, on her intercession, 200 Filipino prisoners were freed by the King. Not only freed, binigyan pa ng eroplano ni King Abdullah para iuwi sa Pilipinas. And after that, in the following years 2007 and 2008, 500 more Filipino prisoners were freed," Ermita said.
Mrs. Arroyo’s economic adviser and Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, meanwhile, justified the foreign trips, saying these have become a very important tool in a globalized and competitive world. Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
