Reyes wants new SC justices in HRET
MANILA - Marinduque Rep. Regina Reyes wants Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to replace the justices currently sitting in the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET).
Reyes lashed out at an unnamed Supreme Court justice whom she accused of castrating the powers of the House of Representatives.
“Last week, this representation received a copy of a draft resolution of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal, a draft resolution penned by a justice of the Supreme Court closely associated with the chairman of the HRET Justice Presbitero Velasco," she said.
"The said draft resolution is premised on my not being a member of the House of Representatives because of the untimely decision of the Supreme Court in Reyes vs Comelec favoring the son of HRET chairman and Supreme Court Justice Presbitero Velasco," she added.
Velasco's son is contesting Reyes’ seat.
"Justice Velasco's mere chairmanship of the HRET is a conflict of interest," she said.
Reyes also lashed out at Justice Lucas Bersamin, who like Velasco is from a political family. "Worse than such potential conflict (of interest) is the fact that Justice Bersamin who voted against my petition in the Supreme Court and effectively prejudged my case, continues to sit in the HRET cases against me," she said.
Reyes also picked on Justice Diosdado Peralta.
“Justice Peralta did not act on the pending cases against me with the HRET until the Supreme Court finally disposed of my case and only to dismiss the cases against me in the HRET when it appeared that our good Speaker Feliciano Belmonte was not about to let the defeated Velasco take my seat. As there was no decision in the HRET, Justice Peralta revived the case against me and even acted on a petition for intervention which is not recognized under HRET rules," Reyes said.
