Hijacker's bullets likely killed HK tourists: police

MANILA, Philippines - The bullets that killed 8 Hong Kong tourists in a Manila siege likely all came from the hijacker holding them captive and not from the police rescue team, a police spokesman said.

"We can say that with a certain degree of certainty," Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz, spokesman of the Philippine National Police, told reporters when asked if the bullets that killed the tourists came from the hijacker's weapons.

Cruz said the initial finding was based on witness accounts and testimony from the police involved in ending Monday's hostage crisis, as well as the number of bullets found on the bus.

However, in his briefing to the press on Thursday, he said the police investigation was still ongoing and that final conclusions had not yet been made.

Ex-policeman Rolando Mendoza held a busload of Hong Kong tourists hostage in a desperate bid to have himself cleared of extortion charges and get his job back.

After a standoff of about 10 hours, a police SWAT team assaulted the bus but its members were held at bay by Mendoza who police said used the hostages as human shields.

Cruz said the PNP leadership has ordered the relief of 4 SWAT team leaders involved in the Manila bus siege while an investigation is ongoing. Relieved were Chief Inspector Santiago Pascual, Senior Police Officer 4 Reynaldo Antonio, SPO3 Alfonso Gameng, and SPO2 Bernardo Espinosa.

Manila Police Chief District head Rodolfo Magtibay was also ordered relieved after the hostage incident.

"This was the decision of the PNP leadership. They were the team leaders. They were relieved so that they would not influence the records and the equipment; and the people deployed during the height of the crisis," he told radio dzMM.

He said the PNP has ordered all 10 SWAT members involved in the bus siege to make themselves available for forensic examination including paraffin test to determine who among them fired their weapons.

He said the PNP will also investigate why Superintendent Nelson Yabut, chief of the MPD’s Public Safety Battalion, was allowed to join the bus siege.

Footage of the bus siege showed Yabut carrying a .45 caliber pistol, and in general police uniform and a black police field cap. He was not wearing a bullet-proof vest and protective helmet, and was being covered by a policeman with a shield.  With Agence France-Presse

Superintendent Nelson Yabut

Superintendent Nelson Yabut. Check out this Philippine police official, he tells the media that he's the assault team leader, and then it turns out he's not even authorized to be there. He even has the gall to give updates to the media after the incident. Bwahahahaha. Only in the Philippines!

Don't act as a know-it-all!

Don't act as if you know all! Do not ridicule the Philippines just because a very unfortunate event happened.

Opinions are opinions and we should respect it but be careful with your words.

I bet you're not from our country. Don't prove us right by your ridicules coz it only proves that you guys are sooooo stubborn and pickled-minded.

WATCH CSI for PROPER PROCEDURES PLEASE

why is it that they are releasing statements that are inconclusive and are just based on "statements" from witnesses? who the hell among the victims would pay attention to see if Mendoza was shooting them one by one if they were so afraid of dying ang being shot? the only way to be sure of whose bullets killed the victims will be from the bullet slugs recovered from the bodies of the victim and comparing them with the samples from the guns used by both Mendoza and the assault team. napakabobo nitong si Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz, spokesman of the Philippine National Police,at ngayon tiyak na lalabas na nagmamalinis ang mga pulis. also, isa pang katangahan, bakit kelangan mag paraffin test yung SWAT(Sugod-Wait-Atras-Tago) eh sigurado namang lahat sila nagpaputok ng baril. KABOBOHAN talaga ng mga spokesperson ng PNP....... suko na ako sa pagka istupido ninyo, lalo niyo lang pinalala yung sitwasyon.....

It is always easier to spot the mistake than good deeds

When my loved ones were killed, there was not even a police report provided, no photos whatsoever. I have never ever trusted the policing system in our country. However, the more I looked at the videos of this hostage taking, I see a group of men who had risked their lives to do their job. These men have children and families as well. To us seeing the video, we seem to have it compared with the movies where happy endings are almost certain. These men were dealing with an armed person who have used human lives as his shield. The system failed, our police have failed, our country have failed and its a shame. It happens that everything was caught live on tv, its sensational. I feel so sorry for the lives that have been lost.
