CJ Puno plans to expand writ of amparo
The Supreme Court will look into the expansion of the writ of amparo to help protect social and economic rights, Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno said Thursday.
In a speech at the "Kabuhayan, Karapatan, Katarungan" forum at the University of the Philippines College of Law in Quezon City, Puno also disclosed some proposals the court is already studying after the Forum on Increasing Access to Justice to the Poor last July.
Some of the proposals are the lowering of court fees and the strengthening of the Justice on Wheels program, among others.
He also said the Writ of Amparo could possibly be extended to be used for the protection of people who will be affected by demolitions and other cases that would affect social and economic rights.
This also came after several groups, led by Bayan and the National Union of People's Lawyers, appealed to Puno to put in place measures that would help in giving justice to the poor.
The group gave several suggestions to Puno, who then assured the groups that they will study the said proposals.
The said writ is a judicial remedy that is made available to anyone whose rights to life, liberty and security are threatened or have been violated by a public institution or employee or a private entity.
Currently, the writ is covering extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, and similar threats to persons. With a report from Marieton Pacheco, ABS-CBN News
