Group wants Supreme Court to abolish pork
MANILA - Social Justice Society (SJS) President Samson Alcantara filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to abolish the pork barrel.
In a 9-page petition, Alcantara said that he is filing the petition in his capacity as a taxpayer.
He asked the SC to declare the pork barrel system as unconstitutional.
He also asked the high court to stop Senate President Franklin Drilon and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte from further taking any steps to enact legislation appropriating priority development assistance funds.
He said, “the pork barrel system enables the members of Congress to pocket for themselves money which should be spent for public purpose, and which are enacted from the people by way of taxes."
He also said, “the pork barrel system makes a mockery of the constitutional mandate on accountability, honesty and integrity of public officers.”
He added the system “renders useless the constitutional principle on separation of powers as it enables the executive to withhold the releases of pork to the lawmakers, thereby controlling them.”
Samson also said the pork barrel system perpetuates political dynasties.
