Impact of hostage drama to Chinese similar to 9/11?

MANILA, Philippines - For the Chinese, could the emotional and psychological impact of an incident like the bloody hostage drama exactly a week ago be compared to the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States?

Filipino-Chinese civil rights activist Teresita Ang-See said the Chinese do not easily forget an incident like that which happened last August 23, especially if it was something that could have otherwise been prevented.

A discharged police officer, Rolando Mendoza, took hostage several tourists inside a bus. After the 12-hour ordeal, 8 Hong Kong tourists and the gunman himself were killed.

Some experts called the police operations a failure, triggering diplomatic strains between the country and the Hong Kong and Chinese governments.

Already, some Filipinos in Hong Kong, mostly working as domestic helpers, are allegedly feeling the backlash. The Hong Kong government has already called on its people for sobriety.

Asked if the effect of the hostage crisis has the same magnitude as the 9/11 attacks, Ang-See said “para sa kanila…yung 9/11 terrorist attack, hindi kayang pigilan. [Yung hostage], kaya sanang i-prevent. Kaya ganun ang galit. Huwag natin sila husgahan sa kailangan nilang gawin. Tanggapin natin na malaki ang backlash sa atin.”

(For them, the 9/11 terrorist attack could not be prevented but the hostage-taking could have been. That is why there is anger. We can't judge them for what they are doing, We must accept that there will be a backlash against us.)

On Sunday, tens of thousands of Hong Kong crowds flocked to Victoria Park to show their outrage and grief over the bus tragedy.

It was not an ordinary day in Hong Kong, as both members of pro-Beijing and pro-democracy political parties banded together to fight for a common cause—that the Philippine government provide immediate justice for the victims.

Chinese-Filipinos in the middle of brouhaha

Ang-See said the Chinese-Filipino community is now in the middle of it all, helpless to even take sides.

In fact, during the send-off of the victims last week, she said “ako ang nag-absorb ng mga pagmumura nila.” She attended the send-off in an effort to pacify the grieving families of the victims.
Filipinos, on the other hand, easily recover from tragedies.

“Madali tayo makalimot, dahil may Diyos tayo…We just say ‘It’s God’s will.’…At sa atin, marami na tayong dinaanang trahedya. It was one of the unfortunate tragedies,” she said.

(It's easy for us to forget because we look to God. We just say 'It's God's will. And we've been through so many tragedies.)

She cited, for example, the execution of Flor Contemplacion in Singapore because of murder charges.

The incident caused many Filipinos to show their outrage against both the Philippine and Singaporean governments over the abuse they have received from their foreign employers.

She said the issue has been forgotten by many.

Ang-See said that while the nation moves forward, “ipakita natin na nalulungkot tayo, na galit tayo. Ang pinaka-frontliners natin ay ang mga domestic helpers sa Hong Kong…[They can prove] na maganda ang ipinapakita nila sa mga amo nila, na masisipag ang mga Pinoy.”

(We have to show that we are sad, that we are angry. Our frontliners are the domestic helpers in Hong Kong. They can prove that they treat their employers well, that Filipinos are hardworking.)

Many things went wrong!

Many things went wrong, but the major blame should be on the Ombudsman. This is what everybody is saying. Imagine, she has the chance to talk to the hostage taker, and he warned her that is his demands are not met, he would hold her responsible for the worst that will happen. If I were Gutierrez, I would have given in to the demand, just for the sake the innocent foreign tourist, and for the sake of our country. Then afterwards, she can always recall her order, on the ground of duress or undue influence or even imminent threat to the lives of innocent civilians. She is a lawyer, and she should now it. She should have used her head, and her sense of good judgment. That's the difference between a good lawyer and a stupid one. Everyone knows how she protected the Arroyos who are considered very corrupt, but she cannot even lift a finger to protect the lives of innocent people.

It's really a shame and disgusting, what she did or did not do, could have made the difference. Maybe, that was also what she wanted, to put the Aquino Gov't down, at the expense of 8 innocent lives. She will have to live with it for the rest of her life. Thank you Mercy..

Ombudsman's Blunder

If you read the transcrip during the last moment before Mendoza fired his fisrt shot. He has a chance to talk to the Ombudsman, and he told her that if you will not give it to my demand, you will be responsible for the worst that will happen. Now, my question is: Why didn't Ombudsman Gutierrez just give it to the demand that he be reinstated, just to end the crisis and save the lives of the innocent foreign tourist. She did not use her sense of judgment. She could just issue the order reinstating Mendoza, and then after the crisis end, she could recall it afterwards. She could have done our country a great favor, and most importantly, save the lives of innocent foreign people. None of these could have happened had she just use her good sense of judgment. Now she has blood in her hands.

stop with the insults please

are you trying to make americans mad now as well?

they are in no way similar , America was attacked by a planned group of terrorist and killed thousands

How can you compare that to a bus that was taken hostage by someone from your own police force........

Absolutely ridiculous comment

As a chinese myself I feel like she is making a big fool of herself and to the chinese people. How can this isolated hostage taking incident in Manila compare to the horror of 911 ? 911 was an act of terror where over 3000 people from WTC die without even knowing what really happened.

Ok Ms ANg-See must be a bumbling moron

First she claimed that Capt. Mendoza's action is comparable to the 9-11 attack here in the U.S. then she changes pace and said that at least 9-11 was conducted by terrorist. She is implying that Rolando Mendoza's action wasn't terrorism. Ok Ms. Belekoy eating fool.... Capt. Mendoza's actions was indeed an act of terrorism because he attack un-armed civilians. Maybe her racist self is just rearing her ugly head as she probaly thinks that terrorist are only middle east men with beards and are muslims. Get the hell out of this planet!!!! these type of people is a waste of out planet's oxygen resources.

I'm not going to baby you or sugar coat my words to sweeten you up; but you will know where I stand !

Media

1

The media is sure making the hijacking a Chinese 9/11. 8 Chinese died, and a few more were injured, by one ex-policeman acting alone using foreigners (not necessarily Chinese) to put leverage on the government. The United States lost 3,000 people by a group of terrorists who deliberately sought to attack Americans in their own homeland and who were part of a religious group who wanted jihad against the United States.

The two events are not remotely the same. The only thing linking them is that people died.

Not in the same Magnitude at All!

My stand:
(1.)The Philippine media should shut up and do the country a BIG favor
(2.)The Filipino-Chinese community should just go back to China
(3.)The Filipinos should rally behind its own government (and people) regardless of how it faulted or no matter how incompetent (they think our authorities are) instead of putting our country in a bad light over and over again
(4.)These HK/Chinese people have abused Filipinos in the past, and there are still incidents of daily abuses but because Filipinos are more God-fearing people (compared to the Chinese) we don't bear the brunt of any form of injustice or abuse as hard as nationals of other countries do. We were raised to take things as God's way.
(5.)The Filipinos are compassionate, forgiving, accepting, generally optimistic people. These traits set us apart from the rest of the Southeast Asian people - these are the very same traits keeping the country POOR.

Why the Filipino Chinese

Why the Filipino Chinese community should go back to China ?We have been in the Philippines long before King Philip of Spain from the 16th century name our country. Our national hero Dr Jose Rizal is a Mestizo and he has chinese blood in his family too and so as many many other Filipinos living in the Philippines and Overseas.

In that case then 90% of

In that case then 90% of Filipinos would be moving to China including the President, his cabinet members, his opponents, even the NPA and MILF.

The only people that will remain here are the Aetas.
