Air bed, air-con for Napoles
MANILA – Janet Lim Napoles, the businesswoman alleged to have schemed with several lawmakers to pocket pork barrel funds, slept in an air bed inside her special detention room at the Makati City Jail.
Napoles slept between 2 and 3 a.m. after being transferred to the Makati jail late Thursday evening, sources told radio dzMM.
The Napoles family had to bring in an air bed for Napoles since her room was only furnished with a couch. As of 9:20 a.m., Napoles was still asleep.
The room, which the government said was set up to ensure the security of Napoles, is also equipped with an air-conditioner.
The electricity cost from using the air-conditioner will be shouldered by the Makati City Jail, which is under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
Napoles, the 104th female inmate of the Makati City Jail, is being guarded by two Special Action Force (SAF) personnel and two female jail officers.
As of Friday morning, Napoles' husband Jimmy was still inside the premises of the Makati City Jail.
According to the same source, the Makati City Jail will be serving "Lomi" for breakfast today.
Stir-fried bean sprouts (toge) with tofu and misua soup with patola and chicken will be served for lunch and dinner, respectively.
Napoles camp opposes Makati detention
One of the lawyers of Napoles, Atty. Bettina Zamora, filed an urgent motion for reconsideration, requesting that Napoles be detained instead in Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig or Camp Crame.
Another Napoles counsel, Atty. Lorna Kapunan, meanwhile, said they will respect the court's decision on the motion, saying their priority is the security and safety of Napoles.
"We're not complaining about the comfort. We are very happy about the security arrangement, 'yun lang. 'Yung discomfort niya ay part of surrendering, hindi naman kami makakapili kung saan siya ide-detain basta assured kami at maraming nagbabantay diyan sa loob. Comfort is the least of our worries," she said.
Napoles was ordered arrested by the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 150 for the serious illegal detention charges filed by her distant relative and former assistant, Benhur Luy, who tagged her in the multi-billion peso scam that has rocked the nation.
A case has yet to be filed against Napoles involving the alleged misuse of the pork barrel funds. The government, through the Inter-Agency Anti-Graft Coordinating Council (IAGCC), has launched a probe into the scam.
Napoles has been accused of setting up fake non-government organizations to pocket pork barrel funds from certain lawmakers, who in turn allegedly got huge cuts from the deal with the businesswoman. - report from Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
