Erap won't do a Mar, says Maceda

MANILA - Don't expect former President Joseph Estrada to follow the example of Senator Manuel 'Mar' Roxas, who gave up his presidential bid on Tuesday in a bid to unify the opposition.

In a statement, United Opposition (UNO) spokesman and former Ambassador Ernesto Maceda said Roxas' decision to withdraw from the 2010 race "will have no bearing on the decision on President Joseph Estrada's plans for 2010."

"We welcome Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's entry into the race and we salute Sen. Manuel 'Mar' Roxas' sacrifice. The more candidates, the better for democratic process," Maceda said.

"As President Estrada has said, it does not affect his decision to run," Maceda added.

"There's no turning back. President Erap has heard the voice of the Filipino people for him to return to Malacañang and finish all his pro-poor programs," he said.

Estrada was forced to step down from the presidency in January 2001 after a military-backed people power revolt. He only served for two-and-a-half years. He was found guilty of plunder in 2007 but was pardoned by President Arroyo.

Erap: Noynoy most qualified

In a separate statement issued after Roxas announced his withdrawal, Margaux Salcedo, the official spokesperson of Estrada, said the former chief executive "salutes Senator Mar Roxas for his sacrifice for the sake of unity within the Liberal Party and congratulates Senator Noynoy Aquino on his decision to run for president in 2010."

"He has always held the highest regard and admiration for Senator Noynoy Aquino's parents, the late Senator Ninoy and President Cory Aquino and believe that Senator Aquino is most qualified to seek the presidency, just as Senator Mar Roxas was also so qualified," Salcedo said.

"We hope that other presidential candidates could also follow the example of Senator Mar Roxas and be willing to give way, not only for the sake of unity within their parties but for the sake of unity for the entire opposition. Former President Estrada has always maintained that his dream is for the Opposition unite in order to field only one standard bearer in 2010 to ensure the victory of the Opposition," she added.

Roxas formally announced his withdrawal from the 2010 presidential race on Tuesday and his support for Noynoy.

"I am announcing my support for the candicacy of Noynoy Aquino for President in 2010," Roxas said at a press conference at the historic Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan.

Noynoy's late mother, former President Corazon Aquino, was sworn into office after a people power revolt in February 1986 at the Club Filipino.

"Noy has made it clear to me that he wants to carry the torch of leadership. The passing of our beloved former President Aquino has reawakened a passion among us. I acknowledge this as fuel to bring us to the realization of our dream: Good will triumph over evil," he said in his speech.

"Ito na ang pinakamabigat na desisyon sa buhay ko. Maniwala man kayo o hindi, ginagawa ko ito para sa bayan, para sa inyo. I do this for unity in support of change. And if that means that somebody must make the sacrifice, it must be me. Ako na," Roxas said.

pahabol...

Erap's "alleged" role to unite the opposition is a lot of baloney. Noon pa man bago magdeklara ang iba matagal ng sinabi ni Erap na tatakbo siya; ngayon, "sinong common candidate ang sinasabi ni Erap kundi siya rin??? The truth of the matter is that people may not be aware that Erap's unquenchable thirst for power is the main reason why the opposition is in disarray. Of course no opposition candidate will say it openly because of the fear of offending Erap's followers and risk losing a valuable support. Yet, the truth of the matter is that all the opposition candidate believe that they have a very good chance of winning for the opposition because of Erap's proven tarnished track record. My second choice is an Escudero-Legarda tandem.

my viewpoint...

Though it would seem that a common candidate particularly the Aquino-Roxas tandem would help the chances of the opposition a lot, I don't necessarily agree with Sen. Lacson call for Erap to withdraw and support the Aquino-Roxas tandem. In my point of view, except for other opposition wannabes, Erap's and Villar's support would be more of liabilities than assets. People support the Aquino-Roxas tandem mainly of their integrity so that it would be the height of stupidity if they will allow their records to be indirectly tarnished by the aforementioned candidates' support. Sorry but that's how I see it.

Let's use our hearts and mind to choose the fitted one. Para sa salitang PAGBABAGO!

i admire senator Roxas in his

i admire senator Roxas in his desicion to step down in the presidential race in 2010 giving the way for senator Noynoy Aquino the chance to prove himself, but for me, i would like to see the tandem of AQUINO-ROXAS. These two gentlemen are the answer of many Filipinos for a better governance.Enough is enough for the TRAPOS, these TRAPOS only knows themselves, they are good speakers only, but after the storm, you will see the true character. Its about time to change completely the people who will stir the wheel of fortune in our country.we will be a great nation again if we only use our mind, our heart in putting good man in the office. Huwag tayong patalo sa mga kung ano ano na lang na kapag binigyan ng 500k e ok na iboboto na natin, pero ang di nyo alam, ang katumbas ng 500k na yon ay 6 years of pagsisisi, kaya we must be wise enough, suriin natin mabuti kung sino talaga ang karapatdapat, maawa na tayo sa ating inang PILIPINAS.i believe the tandem of AQUINO-ROXAS will make our conutry a great nation again.

AQUINO/ERAP/VILLAR

It is time for AQUINO, ERAP and VILLAR to have a summit on who is going to be the main opposition candidate for the 2010 presidential election. ERAP will be the main mediator for the AQUINO and VILLAR dialogue since Erap wants them to unite to field a common candidate. Erap made it known he will not run if the opposition agree to field one major candidate. THIS IS VERY POSSIBLE. I would like to see an AQUINO/VILLAR OR VILLAR/AQUINO in 2010. If all of you are dead serious about solving the country's gigantic problems mainly corruptions, poverty, hunger, unemployment, Mindanao peace and order, one of you has to make the supreme sacrifice. Let us make this go forward so we can solve the country's ills, gentlemen. To you Mr. Aquino, Mr. ERAP and Mr. Villar, all of you I hope will do the right thing. Good luck, Sirs.

Basta matiwasay ka na lang umurong at bigyan mo ng pagkakataon ang malayang bansa para pumili nang susunod na mga liders…………

ERAP & MACEDA

ERAP, you had your chance to run the country but you let it got away because you were too soft against your enemies and you paid a big price for it, so sorry. And for Mr. Maceda, I know you have a lot of personal interest going on why you want ERAP back in MP by the stinking Pasig river. Let the young blood run the country. Maybe it's for the better. The Filipinos are tired of corruption and want to move the country out of the abyss into progress. Why don't you and ERAP just fade away and you will not be forgotten against your past. Enjoy your grand children and go fishing sometimes. You & Erap both will feel better for it until your last breath. GOD Bless Mr. Maceda.
