BPOs, electronics firms excluded from holiday
MANILA - Acting on a request from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) chief, Malacañang announced on Saturday that Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs) offices and companies in the electronics industry are exempted from the non-working holiday on Monday, September 7.
In a text message, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde, said the "BPO and electronic industries are exempted from the non-working holiday proclamation on Monday as requested by DTI Secretary Peter Favila."
President Arroyo on Friday declared September 7 and 21 as non-working holidays throughout the country.
Malacañang declared September 7 as a national day of mourning for the late Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) leader Bro. Eraño 'Ka Erdie' Manalo. All flags will be flown at half mast on Monday.
The President had earlier declared September 21 as a non-working holiday to commemorate Eid Al Fitr or the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
INC spokesman Bienvenido Santiago on Friday announced that "the interment of the late Brother Eraño G. Manalo, Executive Minister of the Church of Christ, will be held on September 7, 2009, Monday, 12:00 noon at the Tabernacle located near the Central Temple."
Obvious
This is too obvious.
1. OBVIOUSly, di nag-iisip ang DTI and they don't have any idea on the concept of BPO and how we work. In the BPO sector, it's already a given that reps or agents taking calls are REQUIRED to come to work even on holidays, may it be legal or special. Management staff has an option not to go to work. If they do, they can either get OT pay or IL.
2. OBVIOUSly, ayaw nila magbayad ng OT pay.
3. OBVIOUSly, may descrimination. DOn't they deserve a day off from work as everybody else is enjoying it?!?!
Lumalala na ang 'pinas. tsk tsk tsk
Sep 7 Exemption
I am not against the holiday nor the exemption of the BPO and Electronics industry from the Sep 7 holiday. I am just too concerned about how our Malacanang officials make decisions. It is obvious they did not consult different sectors. They should think that they are making decisions for the entire nation and not for just a few, so anything they announce should be well thought of, deliberated and consulted. They had the whole week to contemplate on this, so what went wrong?
With this, as a TAX PAYER (and their employer), I demand Malacanang to exempt all BPO and Electornics employees to exempt them from paying income taxes for this day, Sep 7. I also demand that SSS, Pag-Ibig, Philhealth and other government institutions supporting the BPO and Electronics companies be also exempted from this holiday. And last but not the least, I demand that those who made the decision and announced a short-notice holiday and the withdrawal of this holiday for BPO & Electronics sector be suspended indefinitely from their posts for their gross negligence and incompetence!
a response for be grateful
In defense of the people who posted their disapproval of the exemption, we aren't ungrateful of our jobs. This isn't about the fact that many are jobless. This is about the fact that a holiday was declared and certain sectors are exempted.
These people are asking WHY they were exempted.
If BPO and call centers can request for an exemption, why not for the food industry. I'm pretty sure restaurants and malls would love to operate without paying their employees extra for working during a holiday.
If the government was concerns about the impact of this holiday to the employers and business owners, they should NOT declared the holiday at all.
As a lesson for next year's election, let's make sure to elect more sensible officials who would not consider exemptions due to senseless reasons. If its a holiday, it should be a holiday for all - otherwise none at all. The law should apply to all, otherwise to none at all.
BE GREATFUL
Magpasalamat kayo meron kayong trabaho. Magpasalamat kayo meron kayong trabaho at natutustusan nyo and inyon pangangailangan. Same as Sept.
Bakit may exemption
UNFAIR
Well according to the news... Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) requested for the action, citing the “24/7” nature of the two sector.." What about the employees working in 7-11 stores, they work 24/7.
This is unfair for us. There are companies and establishments who operates 24/7.
They cant just say na because of the nature of the work (24/7) kaya na exempt sa holiday.
DTI secretary, anu ba tong naiisip mo? Nag iisip ka pa nga ba?
tama ba naman yung katwiran
tama ba naman yung katwiran nila? "...Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) requested for the action, citing the “24/7” nature of the two sector.."
if that is the premise ...then ... would we be expecting soon na ma-exempt na BPO sa lahat ng holidays... "citing the 24/7 nature of the 2 sectors"
then what of Hospitals?
and bakit wala bang INC and Muslim na nagwowork sa call center? so dapat d na din Holiday ang Christmas for Christians para fair?
Kung ano-ano naiisip nila!

BPOs exempted from holiday pay
Whatever happened to the principle of equal protection of the laws? Are BPO laborers not citizens?
tsk tsk tsk
hirap tlaga mag call center agent, in this times some people enjoy with their family because it's holiday but call center agents are sitting on their posts wearing their headsets and dealing with difficult customers...and yet exempted for the non working holiday... I know how it feels working on holidays I've been there before lol... I remember my first christmas in the office, our shift ended at 3am, so when I got home everybody were already asleep,,...
