'Spare Corona,' Palace urged
MANILA, Philippines - The House minority on Wednesday urged the Aquino administration to spare former Chief Justice Renato Corona and his family from cases of forfeiture and tax evasion.
Minority leader Rep. Danilo Suarez said Corona already suffered much during his impeachment.
He said Corona and his family suffered unimaginable embarrassment and stress and the former chief justice also lost his job.
Suarez said there is no need to hit a man when he is already down.
Rep. Mitos Magsaysay also appealed for compassion for the former chief justice.
She said the Aquino administration should be magnanimous in victory.
After being sued for tax evasion by the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Corona may also face a forfeiture of assets charge, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales has revealed.
Morales welcomed the filing of tax evasion charges by the BIR against Corona, his daughter and son-in-law.
She said she is also pursuing a case for forfeiture of assets against Corona.
The Ombudsman said filing of the case may not proceed for now due to the 1-year ban related to the 2013 May election.
