MANILA – Malacañang on Saturday defended the Philippine National Police (PNP) for releasing daily updates on the meals, health and visitors of detained businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the PNP is making this information available for transparency.

“The PNP is doing this for the sake of transparency. Kasi nakita naman natin, maraming interesado talaga doon sa kaso kaya nagbibigay tayo ng mga daily updates para mabigyan naman ng idea 'yung mga kawani ng media na nagbabantay doon,” she said in a radio interview.

Valte believes there is nothing wrong with releasing Napoles’ itinerary as long as it does not violate her privacy.

“Para mabigyan sila naman ng impormasyon dahil hindi kasi nila nakikita visually eh, because of the security doon sa Fort Sto. Domingo kaya binibigyan naman sila ng mga updates at wala naman sigurong masama doon sa pagbibigay ng updates doon sa mga kawani ng media,” she said.

The camp of Napoles earlier cried foul over the updates and photographs released by the PNP-Public Information Office through its Twitter and Facebook accounts.

One of Napoles’ lawyers, Atty. Lorna Kapunan, also expressed concern over the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras inside her client’s cell because privacy may be compromised.

Six closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras were installed inside and outside Napoles’ cell on Friday, but PNP spokesman Sr. Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac said the live footage will not be released to the public.

Napoles is detained at the PNP-Special Action Forces camp in Laguna for charges of illegal serious detention of pork scam whistleblower Benhur Luy.

Napoles is accused of being the mastermind in the alleged multi-billion peso scam.
