Palace, Comelec welcome SC's OK of automation
MANILA - Malacañang and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) collectively heaved a sigh of relief after the Supreme Court gave the go-signal to automate next year’s polls.
“Sa wakas, matutuloy na ng walang balakid ang automation (At last, automation will now push through),” Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said in a Palace briefing.
The Comelec said the SC ruling is a vindication for the poll body, and an acknowledgement of the transparency it has exercised in implementing the project.
“The decision vindicates the hard work we have been doing,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said.
Jimenez urged UP law professor Harry Roque not to seek for a reconsideration of the ruling “since the Court has spoken decisively.”
Roque led petitioners in a suit against the poll automation contract, which was awarded to winning consortium Smartmatic-Total Information Management (Smartmatic-TIM).
Two reliable SC sources said the Tribunal had voted 11-3-1 in favor of upholding the contract between Comelec and the consortium.
The P7.2 billion automation contract seeks to computerize the elections, from the counting to the consolidation and transmission of election results.
The consortium has claimed that the results of the presidential race will be known in two to three days under an automated system.
Now, it's up to the public
In a separate statement, Roque said the automation issue has gone beyond the Court and has spilled over into the public arena.
“We have done our duty to question before the highest court of the land this undemocratic and unconstitutional system that attacks the core of our democratic way of life," he said.
"While we will undertake to pursue all the legal remedies available to us - including asking the Supreme Court to reconsider this unfortunate ruling - we believe that the struggle has now shifted to the public sphere, and it is to the Filipino public that we now take this battle for openness, transparency and integrity in our national electoral system,” Roque said. -- with reports from Aries Rufo, abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak; Willard Cheng, Joey Villarama, Jeff Canoy, ABS-CBN News

Sa wakas! At na-approved na din ang automation na 'to.. Tama nga lang din to have its validity questioned in the beginning para ma-verify talaga sya ng maayos. Naniniwala pa rin ako sa kakayahan ng SC to make decisions in this aspect. Sana nga, makakatulong talaga ang electronic vote-counting to lessen fraud issues, as completely erasing it is not possible.

Why until now this people is still arguing and complaining this automation being undertaken for the last how many years.Before some vested interests people are complaining of election frauds ,riggings and so forts.Now that the goverment/comelec is trying its best to act on thier demand for a clean and honest election ,this people still complaining about this.
