Brillantes shrugs off Arroyo moves vs Sereno
MANILA, Philippines - Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. on Monday said that moves to have Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno inhibit from cases involving former President Gloria Arroyo and her husband Mike are just ploys to neutralize a potentially adversarial resolution against them.
"It's their right to question anybody, we leave it up to the justice involved," Brillantes said.
"I've always felt long before that inhibition is a matter of numbers game yan. Kung gusto magtanggal, pa-inhibit mo tingin mo kalaban mo," he added.
"They can always adopt it. It's a legtimate strategy. Dito ginagawa iyan pag nakikita the commissioner is inclined towards one kind of ruling, pa-inhibit kaagad," he said.
The camp of the former first gentleman earlier asked Sereno to inhibit anew in a case involving his wife.
The case involves the former president's petition assailing the constitutionality of a Department of Justice-Commission on Elections joint panel, which investigated and subsequently filed charges of electoral sabotage against the former chief executive.
