Mitos to Palace: Stop issuing statements for Puno
MANILA, Philippines - Zambales Rep. Mitos Magsaysay is urging Malacanang to stop issuing statements in behalf of embattled Interior and Local Government Secretary Rico Puno while both houses of Congress are doing their investigation on the supposedly anomalous transactions he is involved in.
In a statement, Magsaysay said the investigations are in line with the administration’s bid for transparency and for the elimination of corruption.
"The probes are intended to get to the bottom of the anomaly. They should be happy about it because the probe is in line with their thrust against irregularities in government. The administration should show no favor whether the ones being probed are allies or opposition. Let the truth come out,” she said.
Malacanang earlier denied it was protecting Puno when news came out he went to the late Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo’s condominium a day after the latter’s plane went missing.
It was also revealed thereafter that Robredo had been doing a probe on the procurement of high-powered rifles involving DILG officials. There is no indication that Puno was after the report, but documents on the matter could implicate him.
Magsaysay said the investigations will be the proper venue for Puno to finally shed light on the issue.
"He is accountable to the people and it is his obligation to appear before the investigations to shed light on the issues that he is facing. During the investigation, he will not have the President to sing his praises, but rather, he has to fend for himself,” she said.
