JPE effective ally except for sin tax, RH bill, says Lacierda

MANILA - Malacañang reiterated on Thursday that it has no hand in the alleged attempt to oust Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda expressed support for Enrile, saying that the Palace has enjoyed a good working relationship with the Senate under Enrile’s leadership.

“The Senate President himself mentioned that the Liberal Party is not involved… We have a good working relationship with the Senate President as far as we know. This is not something the LP is involved with,” Lacierda said.

Lacierda said the Palace prefers Enrile to stay on as Senate President.

“We’ve seen a very healthy relationship with the Senate,” he said.

Asked if Enrile remains an effective ally in pushing the President’s legislative agenda, Lacierda said, “For the most part, except for the sin tax. So we’re hoping that the sin tax and the RH be resolved as soon as possible.”

Lacierda, however, reiterated that Enrile’s position does not depend on the fate of these issues. “No, not to my knowledge,” he said.

Info is reliable: JPE

Enrile on Wednesday said there are indeed plans to oust him.

Enrile told reporters today: “I got the information from a reliable source but I will not discuss that.”

He noted, however, that such a threat comes with the job.

“There are always people who are unhappy with the leadership of anybody.”

Enrile said he is prepared to leave the position anytime.

"Dahil napakabigat ng obligasyon ng Senate President. Hindi ka makapasyal eh," he said.
